The Postal Index Number (PIN Code) is a 6-digit code introduced by the Indian Department of Posts on August 15, 1972, to simplify mail sorting and delivery nationwide.

Anatomy of a 6-Digit PIN Code

Every PIN code in India consists of 6 digits, where each digit has a specific geographical meaning:

  • 1st Digit (Zone): Indicates one of the 9 postal zones in India.
  • 2nd Digit (Sub-Zone): Indicates the postal sub-region or state.
  • 3rd Digit (Sorting District): Identifies the sorting district within the region.
  • Last 3 Digits (Post Office): Identifies the specific delivery post office.

Zone 1:Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh
Zone 2: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
Zone 3:Rajasthan, Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli
Zone 4: Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh
Zone 5: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka
Zone 6: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep

Types of Post Offices in India

India Post categorizes offices into three primary administrative levels:

  • Head Post Office (HO): The primary administrative and financial hub for a district or division.
  • Sub Post Office (SO): Located in towns and suburbs; handles most public delivery, Speed Post, and banking services.
  • Branch Post Office (BO): Located in rural or village areas; provides basic postal and booking services.
