How the 6-Digit Indian PIN Code System Works: Complete Overview
Date: 2026-08-01·By: Postal Engineering Team·4 min read
Introduced on August 15, 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, the Postal Index Number (PIN) system revolutionized mail delivery across India's complex geography.
The Need for PIN Codes in 1972
Before 1972, postal sorters had to manually read handwritten addresses in dozens of different languages and scripts (Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Urdu, Gujarati, etc.). This caused massive sorting backlogs. The introduction of a uniform 6-digit numeric system allowed sorters to quickly group mail by number alone.
Key Components of the Postal Directory
Today, India Post manages over 155,000 post offices nationwide, with over 88% located in rural villages. The PIN code connects these remote offices to central district hubs.
